A day trip to Wallingford.
Exibit in Wallingford Museum.
Part of the fun of building a model railway based on a real location is a visit to see what remains years after it closed. Sometimes the buildings have been changed to a private residence or in the case of goods sheds put to use for commercial storage. In rare cases the line was preserved and everything remained intact. The Wallingford line has in part been preserved but the last quarter mile was lost to a housing estate.
There is nothing left of the terminus and goods yard, the adjacent gas works long gone, just a couple of small brick built stores remain which I guess were once part of the waterworks that was established alongside the line.
A visit to the Wallingford Museum in High Street however reveals a scale model of the station and goods yard plus the possibility of a trip on the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway in Hithercroft Road all make for a worthwhile day out.
The following pictures tell the sad story of what became of the station site and surrounding area.
